City of Hope: Advancing World-Renowned Cancer Treatment and Research in Orange County

Orange County is poised for innumerable breakthroughs across the health care and medical field. Among the leaders is City of Hope, which is advancing world-renowned cancer treatment and research by establishing a National Cancer Institute-designated campus in Orange County.

Lennar Foundation Cancer Center, the county’s most advanced cancer center, is opening at FivePoint Gateway in Irvine this year. It will bring to the region a host of distinguishing services, including a clinical research center offering phase 1 to 3 clinical trials, diagnostic imaging and screenings, precision medicine and early detection, medical oncology, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgical oncology and ambulatory surgery. Orange County’s only hospital dedicated exclusively to treating and curing cancer will open on the site in 2025.

City of Hope’s cancer campus of the future will be a focal point for innovation, offering unmatched specialized expertise and research capabilities. Its 1,000 physicians and researchers focus on only one thing: ending cancer. City of Hope offers nearly 1,000 clinical trials each year and breakthrough treatment options, all delivered by a compassionate team of experts.

The need for this advanced cancer research and treatment has never been greater. One in three Americans will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. Currently, about 20 percent of Orange County residents diagnosed with cancer leave the area for advanced cancer care. Cancer risk increases with age and Orange County’s population is aging faster than the national average.

The cancer treatment and research system is committed to nurturing a collaborative ecosystem that will advance the region’s capacity for healthcare innovation. City of Hope has a long history of innovation. Synthetic human insulin and numerous breakthrough cancer drugs were developed through technology pioneered at City of Hope.

In addition to providing Orange County with innovative treatments and first-of-its-kind cancer care expertise, City of Hope will be a major employer, bringing important tech and medical jobs to the area. It will also be a training ground for young professionals, offering skills they cannot acquire elsewhere.

City of Hope, which began a century ago in Duarte, Calif., is guided by a vision to turn science into practical benefit and accelerate an end to cancer. This promise is being fulfilled as the health care leader builds a network of advanced cancer care across the OC region.

Orange County residents can also access City of Hope’s expertise through four medical locations in  Huntington BeachNewport Beach LidoNewport Beach Fashion Island, and Irvine Sand Canyon. Here, patients can consult with City of Hope cancer specialists and receive a range of therapies and diagnostic services. Additional locations are in Long Beach’s Elm and Worsham neighborhoods.

Along with being a world-class treatment center offering breakthrough therapies, City of Hope is a major biomedical research center. It is one of the few cancer centers globally with the ability to produce cellular, genetic and drug-based therapies to good manufacturing practice (GMP) standards for its patients. In fact, more than 100M people across the globe benefit from City of Hope’s discoveries.
