Virtual Program: PPE Solutions During the Pandemic

May 22, 2020 @ 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM

PPE Solutions During the Pandemic

Farrugia and Wilson’s efforts were initially funded by a $20,000 Go Fund Me campaign, but through teamwork, grassroots mobilization and the engagement of government officials and industry experts, the initiative quickly garnered game-changing corporate support in the form of mass-scale manufacturing firepower and donations:
• Delta pitched in to rapidly manufacture and deliver 2,000 shields to aid workers in New York, and an additional 4,000 for Atlanta-area hospitals. Delta is currently producing 20,000 shields for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
• ExxonMobil joined to take over all manufacturing, lend technical expertise, supply raw materials for the production of over 170,000 shields. In addition, the company is helping GCMI and CHOA design new masks that will enable the production of 40,000 ready-to-use masks and filter cartridges per hour.
• On April 14th, Aflac announced a $2 million donation to amplify the impact of the initiative in Georgia and throughout the U.S.

To date, the life-saving innovation produced by the GCMI and CHOA Pediatric Technology Center’s collaboration with Georgia Tech engineers, local healthcare clinicians and public and private sector support has yielded hundreds of thousands of face shields for healthcare workers fighting the global COVID-19 pandemic and they aren’t stopping. In fact, as more data shows face shields and masks protect from the deadly virus, GCMI is ramping up manufacturing in the U.S. with the ability to seamlessly augment supplies for frontline healthcare workers.
